Your First Step Is Understanding What’s Going On

Reaching out for psychiatric care can feel like a big step.

For some people, it’s a relief.

For others, it’s uncomfortable.

Parents may wonder whether they’re overreacting.

Adults may wonder whether they should simply be able to “handle it.”

Someone who has tried treatment before may wonder whether trying again will actually be different.

Wherever you’re beginning, you don’t need to have everything figured out before your first appointment.

That’s part of why we’re here.

Our goal is to make getting started as clear and comfortable as possible.

STEP 1 - REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT

Complete our secure new-patient request form.

We’ll ask for basic information that helps our team understand what type of care you’re seeking.

STEP 2 - INSURANCE VERIFICATION

Our team will determine whether we participate with your insurance plan and review applicable administrative information.

If you have questions about coverage, we’ll help you understand the information available to us and what you may need to confirm directly with your insurance carrier.

STEP 3 - COMPLETE YOUR FORMS

You may receive questionnaires and intake forms before your appointment.

We know forms aren’t anyone’s favorite part of beginning care. But the information matters.

Completing them carefully gives your clinician important context and allows us to make better use of the time we have together.

STEP 4 - COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION

  • This is where we begin putting the pieces together.

Your clinician may ask about:

  • Your current concerns
    • Psychiatric history
    • Medical history
    • Current and previous medications
    • Previous treatment experiences
    • Family history
    • Sleep
    • Lifestyle
    • Relationships
    • Stressors
    • Daily functioning
    • Strengths and support systems
    • Treatment goals

For children and adolescents, we may also explore developmental history, family relationships, social functioning, school experiences, behavior, routines, and other factors affecting the child’s well-being.

This isn’t about finding something “wrong” with you or your child.

It’s about understanding what’s happening well enough to determine what might help.

STEP 5 - YOUR TREATMENT PLAN

Once we understand the bigger picture, we’ll discuss recommendations with you.

Your individualized treatment plan may include:

Medication management

  • Psychotherapy
  • Behavioral strategies
  • Parenting interventions
  • Lifestyle recommendations
  • Sleep or wellness strategies
  • School or workplace supports
  • Additional evaluation
  • Advanced treatment options
  • Coordination with other healthcare professionals

Not every patient needs every intervention.

That’s the point of individualized care.

You Are Part of the Decision-Making Process.

We believe treatment works best when patients and families understand what we’re recommending, why we’re recommending it, what alternatives exist, and what we’re hoping to accomplish together.

You should feel comfortable asking questions.

You should understand your options.

And you should have a voice in your care.

Because treatment shouldn’t feel like something being done to you.

It should feel like something we’re working on with you.

Ready to Begin?

Sometimes the first step toward feeling better isn’t knowing exactly what you need.

It’s finding someone willing to listen long enough to help you figure it out.
